EPOXY STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES

The advantages offered by epoxy resin structural adhesives such as rapid development of strength, good adhesion, water and alkali resistance, and low shrinkage, although offering a useful material, need to be understood in their own right for successful application. Such adhesives need to be used with care when considering their long-term use as the oldest example of their civil engineering application was only constructed some 25 years ago and some years must elapse before design data is available. The present use of epoxy adhesives in civil engineering offers opportunities for increasing the speed of construction particularly with precast concrete when combined with conventional stressing techniques. Long-term static and dynamic load tests are in progress to study the effect of parameters such as temperature on bonded concrete/concrete and concrete/steel composites. /TRRL/
