COMMERCIAL VEHICLE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT
The paper explains the problems of a commercial vehicle manufacturer in correlating the demands of the market with the economics of large scale production. The author suggests that different scales of sub-units are made and then assembled in different ways to make the various chassis to suit operators needs. This system is made difficult by no common European legislation. The formation of bigger manufacturing groups is inevitable in reducing production costs by economy of scale. Turbocharged engines will become more popular since they are less pollutant and more economical to run. The author favoured turbocharging an engine and then restricting its maximum speed so that the torque output is high compared with its power. Air cooled engines could be made as quiet as liquid cooled engines and much could be done to cushion collisions with heavy lorries, arranged by piping the engine's lubricating system. Not much could be done to cushion collisions with heavy lorries but research was being carried out to improve handling, riding comfort, and braking. Disc brakes produced a more consistent performance. /TRRL/
