COST-CUTTING SULFUR PAVEMENT MAKING INROADS

Pavements using sulfur as a substitute for up to half of the asphalt in asphaltic concrete mixtures are discussed. A technique has been developed which is claimed to make sulfur a superior road building material, and up to 30% less costly (depends on location) than conventional asphaltic materials. It can be used as a base or wearing surface on highways. The first application (in Texas) of the sulfur/asphaltic (S/A) pavement is described, different S/A systems are compared, and the details are outlined of the most extensive field test to date. Complementary processes and the development of a sulfur-asphalt-module (SAM) are described. The use of large quantities of sulfur as a structuring device for sands, and some specialty applications of S/A are briefly discussed.
