SEAL COATING: AN ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

Problems and important aspects of a seal coat project are described, and suggestions are made regarding preparation of the existing surface. It is noted that unless they can be corrected by a sprayed skin patch, all defective areas in the old surface should be cut out and replaced with sound material. Where broken edges have occured, the existing asphalt surface should be restored to the required width and cross-section with premix material; hardened clay or foreign material should be removed; rich flushed areas should be corrected by either burning off and scraping the surface or by use of a heater planer. Various aspects of the asphalt distributor equipment are reviewed and the importance of the aggregate spreader is noted. A pneumatic tired roller is recommended for rolling the aggregate. The avoidance of transverse joints, temperature controls, weather, and the control of traffic through the project, are discussed. Comments are also made on the conversion of an unpaved road to an all-weather road.
