RESEARCH ON MAINTENANCE ON CONCRETE STRUCTURES
Experiments and new techniques for concrete repair are described. One technique consists in sealing the cracks with a quick setting epoxy paste, punching holes through the dried paste with an ice pick and pumping epoxy through one hole until it is pushed from the next hole. A technique is also being developed of combined epoxy injection and post reinforcement for repairing cracks due to structure weaknesses or flaws. Another technique is described for repair of bridge deck delaminations. Core studies are described and preventive maintenance techniques are outlined. One way is to design bridge decks using deeper steel, higher cement factor, lower water-cement ratio, better vibration, etc. For decks subjected to deicing salts, other methods are being researched. A vacuum drill system to measure in situ chloride content is being researched, as well as the electro-removal of chlorides. A modification of the salt permeability cell used by the FHWA and the National Bureau of Standards, is being used to check treatments.
