IMPROVE SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTIVITY WITH LOW-COST, EFFICIENT DATA ACQUISITION, MANAGEMENT, AND ANALYSIS

A computer-based data acquisition system is described which could handle large quantities of data in connection with the measurement of synchrotron radiation emitted by a hot plasma device. The general approach involves converting the information from an analog-triggered event into usable numerical form. Data in this format can be stored in computer data files or in auxilliary memory units. The data acquisition system consists of 3 waveform recorders containing analog-to-digital converters, an interfacing data coupling link between the recorders, and the computer. The computer and the data coupler are connected by a transmission line. Once recorded, the data can be drawn graphically in an interactive minor. The system described here consists of off-the-shelf items that are readily available and easy to organize, to maintain, and to use. When an appropriate time share computer is available, it enhances an experimentalist's ability to record and analyze data at a reasonably low cost.
