ALCOHOL AND ITS RELATION TO HIGHWAY SAFETY IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA

The Oklahoma Alcohol Countermeasures Program (ACP), initiated in March 1974, has implemented and coordinated projects throughout the State since October 1974. These porjects include inforcement training, improving enforcement reporting procedures, public education, and community-wide action projects. The ACP, in itself, is an action program of the Oklahoma Highway Safety Program (OHSP), which is federally funded through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The goal of the OHSP is to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries on the streets and highways of Oklahoma. Thus, in conjuction with the OHSP, the Alcohol Countermeasures Program aims at significantly reducing the seriousness of the problem of the drinking driver. The following article discusses the preliminary analysis performed prior to the implementation of the ACP projects.
