SASKATCHEWAN MOTOR CARRIER FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION: ITS DEVELOPMENT AND ROLE
The economy of the Province of Saskatchewan has long been reliant on the trucking industry, particularly for the operation of the general merchandise rural distribution system. This paper attempts to place in some perspective the difficulties which regular route common carriers presently face in providing common carrier freight service to rural Saskatchewan. Those factors which were of foremost importance in the development of the present system, the rate and operating authority structure as well as the competition between road and rail are sketched. Up to date financial and operational characteristics of the Saskatchewan domiciled rural distribution industry are developed and the service, economic and competitive factors which threaten the stability of this industry identified. Finally, feasible alternative adjustments to the system aimed at alleviating these problems are introduced.
