DEEP WATER MAT-SUPPORTED JACK-UP DRILLING UNIT WITH TUBULAR TELESCOPING COLUMNS AND INTERMEDIATE COLUMN FRAME

Basic features of a mat-supported jack-up mobile drilling unit are described in this paper. Important new components are the telescoping columns, a column frame attached to the lower end of the upper columns, and a jacking system wholly contained in the upper platform which actuates both the lower (inner) and upper (outer) columns. The telescoping columns and an intermediate column frame are not new concepts in themselves. However, the way in which these features are integrated into the overall design is unique and allowed the development of a single jacking system to perform all jacking functions. Drawings and tabulated information show the general arrangement, size, capacities, and particular capabilities of the first rig designed utilizing this configuration and concept. Arrangement of the jacking system is shown and operation of the jacks described. Floating stability and column stress due to dynamic motion is discussed. Wave forces and moments are compared with other column configurations. Weight of the rig is also compared with other mat jack-up rigs.
