EVALUATION OF VISUAL FIELD REQUIREMENTS OF VEHICLES IN FREEWAY MERGING SITUATIONS
The aim of the research presented in this paper is to provide an assessment technique to the vehicle designer to evaluate visual field requirements of the vehicles for various freeway merging situations. The problem is approached by developing a computer model of the merging situation on the basis of the driver behavioral and traffic flow data collected on different freeway merging situations which incorporates: (1) empirical vehicle performance data synchronized with the merging road geometry; (2) driver eye-movement data synchronized with the merging road geometry; and (3) measurement of the characteristics of traffic flows in both the merging lanes. The output of the computer model includes the following: (1) geometric relationship between the angles of view of the visual axes of the drivers in two merging vehicles as a function of time from merging point; and (2) the components of visual cues (both foveal and extra-foveal) that are available to a merging driver about the other converging vehicle. The portions of visual field that provide important information in avoiding side collisions can be determined and, thus, visual field requirements of vehicles for different merging road geometrics can be established. /Author/
