ALL-HYDRAULIC TUNNELLING IN THE SWISS ALPS

The Furka project includes the excavation of three tunnels and is one of the first of its kind in the world where hydraulically powered equipment is used throughout for rock drilling. The editor of Engineering Digest has visited the construction sites and the following article discusses how a new hydraulic drifter was incorporated into a self-contained, integrated rock drilling system, and the economic and ecological effects of all-hydraulic tunnelling.
