THE ROAD AHEAD FOR OFF-HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT

No one is able to accurately predict the future market for construction equipment. Opinions hazarded from several company executives range from blatant pessimison to the hope that continuing growth is about to start. The most faith is expressed in the predictions of Caterpillar, the number one company in the business. Deere & Co., which is primarily interested in forestry, is of the mind that a growth in housing is necessary to stimulate the market. In 1976, highway construction declined considerably as funds were not able to match the costs of materials and equipment. Pipeline construction, which was expected to increase as a result of energy-related projects, was also lagging. Both highway and pipeline construction together account for 30% of the world's sale of earthmoving equipment, but their expected recovery for the coming year is hardly enough to bring them to 1975 levels. The coal mining industry suffered in 1976 also, partly as a result of environmental concerns. The outlook for the coming year, though, predicts a better future in the final analysis, a recovery in the first half of 1977 is too optimistic. The construction equipment industry will have to hold out until at least the latter part of the year before it experiences an upturn.
