EFFECT OF THE INITIAL STATE OF SKELETAL-CLAY SOIL ON ITS DEFORMABILITY AND STRENGTH
A comprehensive study is made of the mechanical properties of clay at different stages of load resistance in a state of triaxial compression. The general scheme for selecting the initial state to be used when constructing high-head dams is outlined. Initial stress states were determined, and experiments for studying the mechanisms of stress-strain state development in the prelimiting region in the state of limit equilibrium and subsequent flow were carried out in a triaxial apparatus. Special attention was devoted to an investigation of dilatancy. The plastic volumetric change corresponding to isotropic compression is discussed, and the mathematical investigations are detailed. The effect of loading conditions is considered. The results of the investigation of the mechanical properties is applied to an evaluation of the effect of the initial state of clay soils (artifically compacted during placement) on the strength and deformability of the core of high-head dams. The study shows that isotropic compression of the soil decreases by 2-2.4 times upon an increase in the density from 2.04 g/cubic centimeter to 2.4 g/cubic centimeter. Such a volumetric change corresponds to a 3-4 times increase of isotropic shrinkage. Also considerable is the effect of initial compaction on deformability during the deviator stage of development of the trajectory.
