ESTIMATING--STATE-OF-THE-ART

The estimator's job has been changed in the last 50 years because of the increased size and complexity of construction projects, changes in the economy, and changes in the available estimating tools. The estimating process used by the general contractor to formulate a precise bid level estimate is reviewed. Mechanical and computational aids to quantity takeoff, the trend from unit costs to resource determination, the influence of computer-aided estimating systems, and the influence of the trend in specification writing are examined. The nature of the construction industry is viewed in the perspective of its influence on estimating.
