FACTORS INFLUENCING THE PERFORMANCE OF RURAL ROAD SHOULDERS
This study examines those characteristics required by base course material used at the seal edge-shoulder location of rural roads. An outline of the service deficiencies associated with the shoulder location indicates that the penetration of water and the associated loss in compressive strength of the base course are vital factors in determining performance at the seal edge-shoulder location. The degree and extent of seal edge wetting are considered and methods by which materials may be compared in the laboratory to assess these factors are discussed. Particular suggestions are then made regarding shoulder density, sorptivity and 'saturated' conductivity which will ensure sufficient compressive strength and resistance to water penetration. /TRRL/
