AN ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF DRIVER EDUCATION

An account is given of a road safety experiment carried out by the University of Salford to try to evaluate driver education. A course of driver education, including classroo and practical teaching, was introduced into the curriculum of sixth form students and an analysis carried out for up to 5 years after the end of the course. The only difference found between the groups who had received different types of training was that those who had received the full course drove less. It was not possible to show that driver education had been successful in reducing accident rate per mile. /TRRL/
