Three basic engine cycles, petrol, gas turbine and diesel are considered in relation to the vehicle requirements for the 1970's and 80'S including noise, invisible emissions, economy, reliability and durability. The diesel engine is chosen and its advantages expanded to demonstrate its potential. The advances offered by turbocharging are highlighted.
