EMERGENCE OF THE MODERN ROUNDABOUT AS A REALITY IN VERMONT AND ITS RELATION TO VERMONT URBAN DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

The sudden emergence of the modern roundabout as a reality in North American transportation results in a growing interest in the brief history and status of roundabout development. The modern roundabout era in North America began in 1990 and the ten or so roundabouts in 1994 tripled by the end of 1996. In 1995 two roundabouts in Vail, Colorado and one in Montpelier, Vermont became the first constructed in snowbelt locations. This paper examines three aspects of Vermont roundabout development and performance: 1) a case study of the four-year Montpelier roundabout history, including the first 19 months of operation; 2) information about five Vermont funded roundabouts and others planned; and 3) an examination and discussion of the roundabout as an urban tool for transportation and land use enhancements based on the Vermont experience.
