BEST MATERIAL FOR LINING TUNNELS
Various types of materials can be used for tunnel seals and protection systems, and for different drainage or separating laye This article details the advantages of plasticised polyvinylchlor (PVC-P) membranes, which are the most economical and effective materials for tunnel waterproofing. It can be argued that the mos important aspect of the waterproofing operation is the welding of membranes, which must be done very carefully to maintain the continuity of the waterproofing system. Any failure in the weldin will cause water leakage in the tunnel, which could be catastroph PVC-P materials have several advantages, including the following. They can be applied under significant load pressure. They have relatively low elastic modulus, so that they can withstand deformations more easily. Their behaviour is excellent for applications with a load that induces planar stresses in the membrane. In this situation, a membrane can support high strength with relatively low elongation. They are self-extinguishing in a fire. Their resistance to static puncturing is much higher. PVC-P membranes can resist much higher static stresses than PE-modified membranes. The article finally outlines some research and develop (R&D) on different types of PVC-P materials used in tunnels.
