CANADA'S VITAL INLAND MARINE INDUSTRY
This paper discusses water transportation in Canada in terms of its development and economic progress. Shipment by water carrier is essential to the rail and road services needed by communities and industries and for exports and imports. Within the continent, Canadian shipping fleets are mainly concerned with the transportation of bulk commodities sold for delivery on this continent or in the world market, and most of these must be carried significant distances. The movement of bulk cargoes, whether from point of extraction or from point of production, and then on to processing plants and refineries thousands of miles distant is made possible and practicable in North America by water transportation, combined with rail and trucks.
