PIERCE TRANSIT'S SIGNAL PRIORITY DEMONSTRATION AND IMPLEMENTATION
As traffic congestion on busy Puget Sound arterials increases, public transit agencies are exploring new and innovative ways to improve transit as a viable alternative to driving alone. One aspect being considered is to reduce the time buses are stopped at intersections. Providing buses with "traffic signal priority" over general purpose traffic is a method that can accomplish this goal. This paper details Pierce Transit's effort to demonstrate the installation and testing of signal priority equipment at 11 intersection along the S. 19th Street corridor in the City of Takoma, Washington and on 15 Pierce Transit buses. The primary objectives and findings of the demonstration are provided.
