CANAL SHUNTER SYSTEM REDUCES WAITING TIME
The president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority has outlined plans to introduce a marine shunter system on the Welland Canal to reduce waiting times for ships. He estimates the method will produce a 19 per cent reduction in downbound and outbound times for each vessel passing through the Canal's eight locks. Although the idea is not new, the method of attaching a special tug or shunter fore and aft is unique. The system is expected to cost between $5 million and $6 million.
