A WORLDWIDE UNIFORM SYSTEM TO REGISTER LOCATIONS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS--ONLY A VISION?
A traffic accident record system is necessary for a cost-effective safety program at any level of government. The more complete the system, the more potential there is for the application of scarce resources to those accident countermeasures that will be most effective in reducing accidents at the lowest cost. A traffic accident record system also represents the information base and provides the technological framework for identifying safety problems, developing corrective measures, and evaluating actions taken. This paper examines ways in which the collection of traffic accident data can be improved by means of using new technologies, such as mobile computers, satellite navigation systems, and geographic information systems.
