ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE WITH BRUSHLESS TRACTION MOTORS

The author compares the requirements of railway operation with present-day technical possibilities of electric drive methods, and discusses initial experience with the BBC/Henschel DE 2500 diesel-electric locomotive and the BBC prototype a.c. locomotive, and their significance for high-powered electric train running. Function and layouts of the switchgear for non-commutator asychronous traction motors are described in detail.
