SPECIAL CORROSION TESTING METHODS

Corrosion rates under dynamic conditions may differ by as much as 4000 times the rate under static conditions in the same electrolyte. Test methods and equipment designed to permit evaluation of materials under erosion-corrosion, cyclical temperature and immersion, velocity, and heat transfer conditions are described. Special attention is given to erosion-corrosion tests in which attack on Ti was 5 to 8 mpy, while high Ni alloys showed over 2500 mpy, and and stainless steels 28 to 566 mpy rates. Under similar conditions, nickel chromium irons were satisfactory, cast iron corroded 12 times as fast as under static conditions, low carbon steel 17 times, and stainless and Ti about the same, according to mill-type data. Glass pipe makes observation of dynamic processes visible, venturi simulations produce useful data and attaching samples to fan blades permits assessment of up to 460 mph velocities. Rotating equipment conditions can be simulated, and cyclic and cyclic and alternate immersion and heat transfer tests showed variations of static vs dynamic conditions for various materials from no change to as much as 4000 times static rates.
