IMPLEMENTING STRATEGIC LANS FOR IMPROVING HIGHWAY SAFETY (ABSTRACT ONLY)
While there has been impressive progress to improve highway safety in the U.S. since the 1950's, there are still significant problems to be addressed. In recent years, this has spurned efforts to develop strategic plans to improve highway safety that can focus limited resources to those aspects where the greatest impact can be realized. In March 1998, a project was approved to assist AASHTO in implementing its strategic plan to improve highway safety. This paper will provide an overview of implementation issues and efforts. It will highlight those aspects that are novel or indicate early successes.
