ROAD SAFETY IN JORDAN

Jordan began its modern development in the seventies. The development of the transportation sector, particularly road infrastructure, has shown substantial growth. This is reflected by the increase of traffic growth. The national road network consists of about 8,700 km of national roads, and over 5,000 km of municipal roads. In 1970 there were about 22,000 vehicles using the roads of Jordan and the fleet has grown since than at a rate over 10% a year, reaching 389,196 in 1998. This growth was more than 3 times the population growth rate. This paper discusses road safety in Jordan. The table of contents lists the following subject headings: road casualties and trends, pedestrian accidents, road safety organizations and funding, road safety in the school, driver training, road infrastructure, vehicle safety, public information, legislation and enforcement, public transportation, road safety problems, and activities and measures currently running or planned to improve road safety in Jordan.
