BOX GIRDERS SUBJECTED TO TORSION - 2
The second part of the paper presents a numerical example illustrating the distortional analysis of box girders based on the 'beam on elastic foundation' analogy. The solution presented embodies a numerical procedure evolved from newmark's method which is well suited for hand analysis. A simply supported prismatic box girder of given sectional dimensions is dealt with in the example so as to compare the accuracy with readily available mathematical results. It is shown how the method can be applied to variable moment of inertia and any type of end conditions, and it is thus possible to study the effects of 'distortion' in isolation, even for the most complex situations, before superimposing them on the other well-known effects that render themselves to simple analyses.(a) /TRRL/
