ROCK EXCAVATION WITH LASER ASSISTANCE

Laser rock-kerfing tests were conducted on isolated samples of granite, diabase and quartzite rock with an electric-discharge CC2 laser. The tests were performed with a moving focused laser beam. Kerfing speeds were varied from 25 to 125 cm/sec and laser powers were varied from 5 to 16.5 kw. Test results, including measurements of penetration depth and volumetric rock removal rate, were generalized to give functional relationships among laser power, kerf depth, and kerfing speed for the three rock types. Concentrated surface loads were applied adjacent to laser and saw-cut kerfs on small blocks of granite to test the hypothesis that substantial rock-weakening occurs due to laser kerfing. Applications are discussed in which the combination of laser kerfing and mechanical forces could be used to assist excavation of hard rock in tunneling and drilling.(a) /TRRL/
