ELECTRIC VAN ON TRIAL
A brief description is given of a new battery-operated delivery van which has an acceleration compatible with other city traffic. Based on a Commer Walk-Thru Chassis with shortened wheelbase, it carries at present 1672 kg of 160V lead-acid battery and its urban use during the spring has shown that it can reliably carry out the 30-40 mile/day of stop-start deliveries while carrying a 1780-kg payload at speeds of up to 40 mile/hour. The initial purchase price will be about 50 per cent greater than that of a van with a conventional engine but lower running and maintenance costs are expected to make the "silent karrier" economically competitive over its projected operational life of 10 years. /TRRL/
