ACMA SEMINAR ON DRUM MIXERS

This article gives a summary of the three papers presented at the ACMA seminar on drum mixers held in London on November 12, 1975, together with an account of the discussion. Dr. K.R. Peattie reviewed the American types of plant which were originally developed to mix emulsions and later used for hot mixes as a means of reducing dust emission. He outlines their operation; it is claimed that capital and running costs are relatively low and output is high Mr. D.W. Barron outlined the practical operation of the Coatmaster plant with particular reference to the developments in design that have taken place at the plant at Dry Rigg quarry. Mr. C.I. Wilson gave an appraisal of the Wibau plant. Contributions to the discussion included an outline of the work carried out at TRRL on these mixers which showed that satisfactory mixes could be obtained with conventional binders. The need for good management, uniform materials and accurate proportioning was stressed. Reference to practical problems included the emission of some dust, limitation in the range of materials that could be produced and the problem of excessive moisture content in the final product. Comments were made on the Wibau plant and studies in Sweden, particularly of the Shearer plant. 150-200 drum mixers were said to be in use in the USA and it has been necessary to add wet scrubbers to most plants. Other points discussed were the reactivation of old pavements, need to change specifications, hardening of the binder, need for adhesion agents and stockpiling. /TRRL/
