B-W PARKWAY GETTING MUCH NEEDED ASPHALT OVERLAY

Repair and resurfacing has been undertaken of various sections of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway where differential slab settlement, cracks, spalls, joint failure, blowups and old patches have been present for some years. Pavement joints (30,000 lineal feet) were cleaned and patched. Approximately 8,000 square yards of concrete at the joints were removed for the full width and depth of the 12-ft wide slabs. Concrete was replaced with full depth asphalt pavements 8 inches thick. A limited amount of hot mix asphalt leveling course was utilized. A 3 1/4 inch overlay is being used. This consists of two 1 1/4 inch thick courses with fine base course gradation. An open graded asphalt friction course 3/4 inch thick is being used as the surface. Tack coat was applied to the old concrete and between overlay courses. Comments are made regarding quality control work. In place hot mix asphalt specifications included statistical controls for aggregate gradation, asphalt content, density, and riding quality.
