PRIVATE ENTERPRISE OR PUBLIC UTILITY? OUTPUT, PRICING AND INVESTMENT IN ENGLISH AND WELSH RAILWAYS, 1879-1914. IN: RAILWAYS. VOLUME 1
G. R. Hawke, in his "Railways and Economic Growth in England and Wales, 1840-70", provides the only estimate of efficiency and declining profitability for the railway industry. He worked out a ton-mileage series for the industry between 1870 and 1890 in the process of assessing the long-term fruitfulness of investment undertaken by the companies before 1870. The purpose of this article is to evaluate Hawke's figures critically and to use them as a starting point for some tentative suggestions about output, investment and pricing after 1870 with a hope that it might add a little to existing knowledge of the performance of the railway industry.
