ON THE APPROXIMATE SOLUTIONS OF A BIQUADRATIC EQUATION FOR WHEELSET HUNTING AND ITS RUNNING STABILITY
Approximate solutions of a biquadratic equation for a wheelset, derived from the basic differential equations of dynamic hunting, are presented. By comparing the numerical results, using a digital computer with an approximate formula, it is clear that the approximate solutions agree quite well with the exact values when the speed is less than the hunting velocity. The limits of stability are defined and criteria are established for a wheel tread profile which operates within those limits.
