STUDY OF ANNOYANCE BY TRAFFIC NOISE IN LEUVEN (BELGIUM)

In this preliminary (to a large-scale investigation) survey traffic noise measurements were made over a period of 6 months, and any enquiry was made at seven points in order to establish a correlation between the annoyance and the measured physical noise level. The physical measurements consisted in recording the traffic noise on a magnetic tape followed by a statistical analysis undertaken in the laboratory. A number of these measurements were repeated on Sundays with restricted traffic. Details of the factor analysis and multivariate analysis on variance are outlined. Correlations between mean factorial scores and the acoustic noise variables, and the correlations between individual annoyance scores and acoustic noise variables are discussed. It was found that the disturbance of diurnal activities by traffic noise shows the highest correlations. It was also found that disturbance of activities generally correlates best with a measure of peak level noise and nocturnal disturbance with a measure of ambient level noise. All results are tabulated and discussed.
