ANALYSIS OF SWELLING-SOIL COLUMN INFILTRATION TEST
The use of the soil column infiltration test on expansive clay is discussed, and a numerical approach to analyze the test as it is generally performed is presented. Consideration is given only to the test carried out in the confined state i.e., no displacements on the outside boundaries of the sample. In the discussion of stress- strain relationships in the expensive-soil column infiltration test and in the analysis, the assumption is made that the water content distribution is a step function. It is shown that for expansive clays, swelling is not restrained during infiltration and different stress-strain relationships are obtained at different points in the column. An approach to the derivation of the pressure- percentage swelling characteristics from the soil column infiltration test is proposed and illustrated. In this analysis the form of the equation that characterizes the swelling behavior of the clay must be assumed to solve the problem. In the example treated, the hyperbolic form was adopted. Further research in instrumentation development is needed to control the degree of restraint of the soil during infiltration.
