SKYWAYS IN MINNEAPOLIS/ST PAUL - PROTOTYPES FOR THE NATION?
Above-grade, predictrain skyway systems are described which include two or more pedestrian bridges that are interconnected by a corridor which permits pedestrian travel above grade across parts (or all) of at least 3 city blocks. The systems in St. Paul and Minneapolis are located at one or more levels above street grade, are connected by escalators and elevators to the street level, and are completely climate controlled. The Minneapolis system has been developed primarily through private initiative while the St. Paul system is essentially a public venture. The seasonal variation in usage of the system has been studied as well as the effects of temperature and precipitation on skyway use and its impact on land use. Lessons learned in planning, design and implementation of the system are listed.
