FORECASTING THE NUMBER AND CHARACTERISTICS OF POTENTIAL USERS OF PARK-AND-RIDE IN OXFORD
A description is given of a study to identify the main characteristics of potential users of a future park and ride facility in Oxford and to estimate the usage of the facility. The new park and ride scheme offered a number of benefits, notably greater penetration into the town centre than was available to the ordinary motorist. The study was based on a questionnaire survey, the design and analysis of which are described. The authors report a bias in the response to the survey; those in favour of park and ride responded at a rate 2.5 times that of the negative respondents. The method by which the bias was detected and eliminated is described, and the conclusions of the survey are based on the corrected results. Most of the negative respondents had access to free private parking, it is suggested, although the positive responses could not be linked in such a simple way. An optimistic estimate of the usage of the park and ride facility is derived, based on the positive responses to the questionnaire, although lower, more realistic, estimates are also derived by separating off those who were less likely to use the facility regularly. /TRRL/
