E.R.A. INVESTIGATES ELECTRICAL VEHICLE ASPECTS

The article describes some of the current design and research being carried out at the Electrical Research Association (ERA) at Leatherhead. The activities summarised are designed to acquire a detailed understanding of the technical, economic and social factors involved. One investigation was a feasibility study of electric filling stations where batteries could be exchanged in a time comparable with that required to refuel a conventional car. The study considered three possible battery types: improved lead-acid, high temperature sodium-sulphur and zinc-air slurry battery. The first type will be replaced as a unit, but the third type will only need slurry replacement. Another aspect of the study was a design investigation of an on-site electrolysis plant to regenerate the spent zinc-air battery slurry. Other marketing studies currently being undertaken are mentioned in the article. /TRRL/
