AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
The author considers that as an investigation tool aerial photographic interpretation has four advantages over most other methods: (1) it is quick and cheap providing comprehensive data (2) it provides data covering a large area of ground including the project area, thus presenting it in context and enabling the viewer to appreciate local and regional factors which may have an impact on the proposed engineering structure (3) it provides an image of the ground surface which aids communication, understanding and appreciation of ground situations, and (4) it has the specific capability of providing pictures of the ground surface in a variety of forms depicting particular information, some of which could not readily be obtained by any other technique. The choice of method is discussed, and a review is presented of the criteria which together constitute the proper selection of photography as illustrated by their value to interpretation for engineering purposes. /TRRL/
