TRAFFIC STUDIES AT T-JUNCTIONS. (1) THE EFFECT OF APPROACH SPEED ON MERGING GAP ACCEPTANCE
In this paper are reported the results of an experiment in which the gap acceptance behaviour of left-turning minor road traffic merging at a T-junction was related to the speeds of approaching vehicles in the main road. In one phase of the experiment, police activity on the main road had the effect of reducing the mean speed of main road traffic. Results support a modified time hypothesis, in which the median accepted gap D (in ft) is related to the approach speed V (in ft/sec.) by D = 38 + 5V. (for D in M and V in m/sec., D = 11.5 + 5V).
