AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF SCAN PERIOD ON CONTROL PERFORMANCE

This paper analyses the DOE's requirements for a one-second scan period in area traffic control by computer, in regard to both system security and traffic control parameters. It is shown that although the one-second scan period could have advantages for the security of the system, it has no great influence on the control parameters of a traffic system operated on a fixed-time basis, e.g. Transyt. Although the data transmission system can be operative on a one-second scan rate for system security, application programs such as the output of traffic signal timings need only to be updated once every two seconds. This method saves a large amount of the processor time and enables smaller computers to be used for atc implementation. /Author/TRRL/
