TEMPERATURE MATCHING CURING BATH - AN AID TO EARLIER FORMWORK STRIKING
The author explains that because of the difficulties of accurately measuring strength within a concrete member at early age, specifications have, in the past, been very conservative in their requirements for minimal striking times, allowing for low levels of protection against heat loss of the concrete in the forms and the poorest levels of site control and workmanship. A temperature matching curing bath (TMCB) is described which has been designed specifically to ensure a true relationship between the strength of the concrete within the structure and that of control cubes. It is in the form of a robust steel trolley with lifting eyes for easy handling on site. The trolley contains a small water bath in which sample concrete cubes, still in their moulds, are cured in water. The temperature of this water matches that at a pre-selected point in the structure itself. An example of the use of TMCB equipment on the construction of a multi-storey concrete frame building is described. /TRRL/
