FATIGUE TESTS ON CONCRETE HINGES

The paper presents results of a series of pulsating load tests conducted on six scaled-models of freyssinet-type concrete hinges intended to support the towers of a cable stayed bridge. Two types of hinges, namely, freyssinet-type of concrete hinge and a similar hinge in which the mass of concrete in the throat region was replaced by a steel plate of equal thickness, were considered for investigation. Model hinges were tested under two million cycles of pulsating loads, and were held under different degrees of rotation during pulsation. Shear as well as ultimate compressive load tests were conducted. Various details and problems involved in the preparation of the models, the test set-up, the test programme and results have been described, and comparison in the behaviour of the two types of hinges has been shown.(a) /TRRL/
