BRIGHTENING UP THE DASHBOARD
The author predicts that within the next three years the electro-mechanical gauges currently used in the car will give way to a single solid state panel giving a clearer display of road speed and engine conditions. With fewer parts it will also be much cheaper to make and more reliable in use. The aim is to show a speedometer reading (often mandatory) and only pressure, temperature and other parameters when they are outside acceptable limits. Details are given of advances in electronic display techniques including the 'smectic', 'nematic', and 'cholestric' types of liquid crystal. Fewer soldered connections improve the reliability of electronic instrumentation which, it is suggested, will fit in well with integrated automatic control and checking systems projected for the future. /TRRL/
