OPTIMUM DESIGN IN SEISMIC ENGINEERING
DISENO OPTIMO EN INGENIERIA SISMICA
On the premise that the purpose of structural engineering is to produce optimal structures, design is optimized for a single-degree structure characterized by two limit states which can occur only in a fixed order: non-structural damage and collapse, and two design parameters: stiffness and resistance. These parameters are dealt with explicitly; they include a typical cross-sectional dimension of a structural member and a typical area of reinforcement, assuming that the structure is of reinforced concrete. Uncertainties in the various variables and design parameters are treated explicitly. This example illustrates the method of optimization. Determination of seismicity is of greatest importance in this respect. Seismicity is discussed in the appendix, covering its regional, local, and microregional aspects. /TRRL/
