CUT-OFF WALLS IN BENTONITE-CEMENT

LAS PANTALLAS IMPERMEABILIZANTES DE BENTONITA-CEMENTO

After a brief review of the most common applications of the bentonite-cement slurries for civil engineering purposes, the author deals with the characteristics of this material, in both fluid and solid states, and its mechanical and rheological behaviour as well as other aspects, such as permeability, susceptibility to internal erosion, pollution, durability, etc., mainly in relation to the construction of impervious cut-offs, which constitutes the objective of the paper. The procedure for constructing this kind of seepage barrier is described in detail. Conventional diaphragm wall drilling machinery is used for excavating the trench, which is simultaneously filled with bentonite-cement slurry in order to maintain the sides of the trench stable. The slurry is not replaced and becomes an impervious solid with strength and deformability similar to that of the surrounding soil. In addition to the flexibility of the material to accommodate ground deformations without cracking, another interesting feature, from the efficiency point of view, is the absence of construction joints, as a consequence of the thixotropic properties of the slurry. Special emphasis is placed on those factors affecting the design of the cut-off and also on the practical aspects of this form of construction. /TRRL/
