The significance of the test pit within the general process of subsurface investigation is presented. The problem of executing deep test pits with requirements for lateral support and drainage is included. The opportunity for the examination of the material in place, surface sampling, and in-situ testing within the test pit is also outlined. It is proposed to minimize the high cost of deep pits for subsurface exploration by coordinating their locations with anticipated excavations during future construction. A case history of two test pits to supplement the subsurface investigation for the Caracas metro is briefly described. /Author/TRRL/
