AD HOC INTERGOVERNMENTAL GROUP ON CONTAINER STANDARDS FOR INTERNATIONAL MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT
The developing countries felt that present arrangements for the standardization of containers were unsatisfactory. The introduction of containerized transport systems was very costly and standardization to the maximum extent possible on a global scale would provide the maximum economic advantages. In their view a world-wide application of container standards could most effectively be achieved through an international convention. The developed countries did not believe that the need for an international convention had been demonstrated. They suggested that the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) should continue its work on technical standards on containers and, with a broader participation of developing countries, promote a more extensive application of the standards it recommends. The socialist countries of Eastern Europe held that the conclusion of an international agreement was not urgent and that the problem might be met through improvement in ISO's work. The group asked that the Trade and Development Board, at its session in September 1977, consider appropriate arrangements for future action.
