A REPORT ON EXPERIENCES WITH LARGE FLEXIBLE METAL PIPE STRUCTURES IN ALBERTA

Culvert design and installation is an inexact science based on experience rather than theoretical design. Much can be learned from successful installations as well as from failures. Other provinces' experiences may become very valuable. The purpose of this presentation is to convey some of the experiences with large structural plate corrugated metal pipes in Alberta. Chosen for discussion are four installations, all constructed within the last six years, three of which have been successful while the fourth has caused considerable difficulties. They are: Blackmud Creek 24' x 32' horizontal arch 1968, Hamelin Creek 20' diameter round culvert 1968, Spirit River 20' diameter round culvert 1969, and Industrial Road underpass 24' x 26' arch structure on concrete footings 1973.
